The fire started around 2:07 p.m. Friday at the store located at 2585 South Road when a rotisserie caught fire, said Chief Tory Gallante of the Arlington Fire Department.
The department arrived within three minutes to find customers already being evacuated by store employees, Gallante said.
"They did an excellent job of evacuating the shoppers," he said. "It can take a while."
The fire was already out by the time firefighters reached the deli section, so they went to work venting all of the smoke inside the building.
Gallante also contacted the Dutchess County Health Department, to check the food that had been exposed to the smoke such as fruits and vegetables, and the Dutchess County Building Department to check for any structural issues.
About 13 firefighters and three fire trucks responded to the incident. There were no reported injuries, the chief added.
The state Argilcture and Market officials also were at the store to check for food safety.
Firefighters cleared the scene by 3:16 p.m. The store remained closed.
